What is Galbanum Fassoukh?

Galbanum Fassoukh (الفاسوخ) is a natural aromatic resin extracted from plants of the genus Ferula — primarily Ferula gummosa and Ferula galbaniflua — which grow in the mountainous regions of Iran, Turkey, and the Maghreb. The resin is harvested by incising the base of the stem, allowing a thick sap to flow out, which hardens into amber-yellow or dark brown pieces.

“Galbanum is a Mother Resin — its balsamic and musky scent purifies space and allows inner energies to flow freely.”

Used since antiquity, Galbanum is mentioned in the Bible as a sacred incense. The Egyptians used it in their religious rituals and for embalming. Hippocrates himself recommended this resin for its therapeutic virtues. Today, it remains a staple of Maghreb traditions for household purification and spiritual protection.

There are two main varieties: White Fassoukh (Fassoukh El Abiad), with a light yellowish hue, and Black Fassoukh (Fassoukh El Assouad), which has a drier, more granular texture. Both are renowned for their powerful purifying and protective properties.

💡
Storage tip: Galbanum expands with heat and becomes pasty. To handle it easily, place it in the freezer for a few hours to harden it. Its color may change over time depending on temperature variations — this is perfectly normal.

Recommended instructions for use

  1. Light a charcoal disk in a heat-resistant censer and wait until it is fully incandescent (about 5 minutes).
  2. Place a piece of Fassoukh the size of a chickpea on the charcoal. The incense will begin to smoke gently.
  3. Let the smoke purify the space. For a complete purification, walk through each room holding the censer. Then ventilate.
  4. For optimal results, repeat this operation once a day for 7 consecutive days.
  5. Store Fassoukh in a cool, dry place. If sticky, place it in the freezer to harden it.
  • 💨Ventilation: Always use in a well-ventilated area to avoid smoke buildup.
  • 👶Children & pets: Keep out of reach of children. Fumes can be irritating in enclosed spaces.
  • 🤰Pregnant women: The use of incense is not recommended. Consult a healthcare professional.
  • 🔥Supervision: Never leave burning charcoal unattended. Extinguish before leaving the room.
  • 🚫Usage: Non-food product — do not ingest. For ritual and aromatic use only.
  • 🌡️Storage: Store away from heat. Color may vary with temperature — quality is not affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

White Fassoukh (Fassoukh El Abiad) comes from pure Galbanum — it is yellowish to white in color, with a sweeter and balsamic scent. Black Fassoukh (Dorema Ammoniacum) has a drier, more granular texture with a more powerful and earthy fragrance. Both are used for purification and protection, but black is considered more potent for unbewitching rituals.
